Comedy Day ~ An SF Legend Since 1981!

This event happens in September every year at Golden Gate Park. (Here’s a map and this is the Comedy Day Website)

This is a ((FREE)) event with 5 hours of comedy to thousands of people.  If you love this event please support it directly, give some love to sponsors and/or BUY YOUR PICNIC LUNCH AND DRINKS AT THE EVENT.   Robin used to be a big supporter of the event from the beginning and now we have get more creative to keep the event going.  (See vendors / menu below) rw award2

Over the past 35 years more than 750 comedians have performed for this event, so my apologies to those fabulous talents not specifically acknowledged, but this website is about Robin’s work specifically.

The goal is not to “obsess” on a cool dude, it is about understanding values, a way of life and finding grace in it all.  Life is challenging, choices are hard and finding grace and humor to rise above it is something he did extra-ordinarily well and inspired many.

Robin received a well deserved award in 2009 for his legendary support of Comedy Day.  Presented by Debi Durst

"City of San Francisco does hereby declare it does not know what SF to deserve him... but as soon as it becomes clear, we plan on doing it again.... whereas without him the sourdough would be less sour, the fog a little thinner and..."

Below is the last known video of Robin’s performances at Comedy Day in 2011 with Rick Overton.  This topics covered include lots of what Robin does best; dick jokes.  These tech jokes were some of the best that I’ve seen from him.

Comedy Day officially started on July 11, 1981 at the Golden Gate Park Music Concourse (a.k.a. The Bandshell).  Comedy Day is the original, longest-running, standup comedy festival in the world. Montreal’s “Just For Laughs Festival,” which debuted in 1983 comes in second. However, Comedy Day stands out from all other comedy festivals, not only because it’s held outdoors, but because it’s FREE!

There are not many early videos, but the one below is from 1984 and apparently this one was legendary.  There’s lots of familiar faces here.

And this is my favorite videos of Comedy Day.  The love and camaraderie is over-whelmly heart warming.  Year after year they keep coming back and creating more joy with each other and each person that comes to the event.

May we suggest leaving your picnic basket at home? (Vendors/sponsors change annually)

This great annual event is mostly paid for by sales of food and drink on the day of the event. So by planning your meal here, you are supporting the future success of this event.

Sharing in his success was important to him

Robin Williams was always very gracious in giving his friends opportunities in the projects he worked on and finding other ways to promote their skills.

He also helped nurture the creation of Comic Relief and Comedy Day events that I believe facilitated lifelong friendships within a vibrant and connected community of comedians, writers, actors and directors.

David Letterman’s tribute after his passing gives you an appreciation this:

The following is rare 1980s footage of Robin with director Howard Storm to promote his directing skills after the conclusion of Mork and Mindy.

In the video, Williams was purposefully being difficult to work with and not listening to directions from Storm to prove the point that, “If he can work with me… he can work with anyone!”

Good Morning NASA!

Going out of your way to get into trouble can be FUN!  In 1988 NASA is entertained by Robin Williams’ with a wake up broadcast to the astronauts orbiting Earth.

The actor’s introduction references his 1987 role in “Good Morning Vietnam” which then  led into a space shuttle-themed song to the tune of the “Green Acres” TV show.

The mission was the first launched since the Challenger disaster in 1986.   Five lucky astronauts received this UN-traditional wake-up call on their first day in orbit on a mission to deploy a satellite that supports numerous other NASA satellites and human spacecraft, including the International Space Station.

Robin spread his love far and wide in ways that always surprised and delighted… boosted spirits and made the world a better place.

Reality What A Concept (Full Show)

This is Robin’s first HBO produced called “Off the Wall.”  It was  recorded at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood in 1978 and he followed that up with his first album “Reality…What a Concept” in 1979.

Some funny quotes from this stand-up performance:

  • I’d like to start the show by showing you something I’m very proud of. You’ll have to step back, though.
  • Oh, no, everyone I’ve ever known! There are people here I’ve slept with twice!
  • I wonder what chairs think about all day: “Oh, here comes another asshole.”
  • Mork? NOOOO! I do that 5 times a week. This is a special time.
  • You’re only given a little spark of madness. you mustn’t lose it.
  • People, they’re kinda like flowers and it’s been a privilege kinda pollinating here in your garden.

Blame Canada, Robin Williams does South Park

In this South Park song the parents decided to blame Canada for the trouble their children have been getting into since watching the Canadian-made movie Terrance and Phillip: Asses of Fire and imitating what they saw and heard in the movie.

The parents refuse to accept that by not preventing their children from watching Terrance and Phillip in the first place, they are themselves to blame for their children’s misbehavior. “Blame Canada” satirizes scapegoating, and parents that do not control “their children’s consumption of popular culture”.

The song (BELOW) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song (1999). This created controversy, because all nominated songs are traditionally performed during the Oscar broadcast, but the song contained the word fuck, which the FCC prohibits using in prime time broadcasts. At the 72nd Academy Awards, Comedian Robin Williams performed the song with a chorus who gasped when the word was to be sung (Williams turned around at the crucial moment, and did not actually sing it).

Inspite of a great performance, The Academy Award was instead awarded to Phil Collins’ song “You’ll Be in My Heart” which was parodied on an episode of South Park released the following year, “Timmy 2000”, as “You’ll Be in Me”.

In that episode, Collins, who acts as the episode’s antagonist, was always seen holding his Oscar statuette. At the end of the episode, it gets painfully stuck up his rectum.

Don’t Worry Be Happy!

When this website was conceived in May of 2012, shortly after losing my home to a fire while severely handicapped, this video hit my radar and resonated very strongly with me.

Chris Reeve, Bobby McFerrin and Robin Williams goof off making a a music video from Bobby’s song “Don’t Worry Be Happy”

Robin Williams USO Routine

Robin Williams’ loved performing for the troupes.  It became a tradition for him to perform around Christmas time.  — For Robin performing for them filled his heart with as much joy as he gave them.

This is a USO routine in Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan in December 2004.

Robin Williams and Bobby McFerrin Sing Come Together

Can you imagine Robin William’s singing the Beatle’s classic “Come Together?”  ~ HINT:  IT IS FABULOUS!

This following is an in-depth interview of the recording process of a classic Beatles song on a new album titled “In My Life” by George Martin, 1998.  He brought along his pal Bobbie McFerrin and they made magic together.

This album was created George Martin’s his farewell tribute before retiring.  He asked pals and heroes to join him in creating it.   It was quite an interesting and varied cast of characters including Goldie Hawn, Phil Collins, Jim Carrey,  and Celine Dion.

This is the production of the song with Robin and his pal:

This is the actual song:
