Robin Williams USO Routine

Robin Williams’ loved performing for the troupes.  It became a tradition for him to perform around Christmas time.  — For Robin performing for them filled his heart with as much joy as he gave them.

This is a USO routine in Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan in December 2004.

Robin Williams and Bobby McFerrin Sing Come Together

Can you imagine Robin William’s singing the Beatle’s classic “Come Together?”  ~ HINT:  IT IS FABULOUS!

This following is an in-depth interview of the recording process of a classic Beatles song on a new album titled “In My Life” by George Martin, 1998.  He brought along his pal Bobbie McFerrin and they made magic together.

This album was created George Martin’s his farewell tribute before retiring.  He asked pals and heroes to join him in creating it.   It was quite an interesting and varied cast of characters including Goldie Hawn, Phil Collins, Jim Carrey,  and Celine Dion.

Inside The Actors Studio with Robin Williams, 2001

Host James Lipton asks his guest the following question: “If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?”

Robin replied  “There’s seating at the front,” is his immediate answer. “The concert begins at five. It’ll be Mozart, Elvis and one of your choosing.”

Then he lapses into sincerity. “If heaven exists, to know that there’s laughter, that would be a great thing.” He gives the tiniest of pauses to set up the punchline: “Just to hear God go, ‘Two Jews walk into a bar…'”

As Lipton reveals, Williams’s installment of the series was the first-ever two-hour episode: The actor actually spoke and performed for the audience for over five hours, but Lipton and the producers simply couldn’t bear to edit the performance any shorter than two hours, according to the DVD extras.

And odd bit of trivia about this show is that  a member of the audience was actually taken away in an ambulance after the show, having developed a hernia from laughing so hard at Williams.

Happy Fourth of July!

“True patriots are no longer champions of any one country in particular, but champions of the human race and the planet earth.”

I think Robin Williams would agree.  He lived these values all his life.forth

In 1982, Robin had done another great piece on independence and our American symbol of this when he pretended to be an American flag in a 3 hour TV special called “I Love Liberty” on March 21st 1982.

It was intended to be a salute to American ideals, commemorating the 250th anniversary of George Washington’s birth.

Robin gives a performance as an American flag  (below) Barbara Streisand performs “America the Beautiful” with the U.S. Air Force Band in England; the Muppets play members of the Continental Congress and Robin’s, then wife, Valerie Valardi also played a part.

The pursuit of happiness… (Moscow on the Hudson)

Independence Day is just a concept until you have the privilege to put it into perspective with another culture.  — This is exactly what Robin Williams did with his film Moscow on the Hudson which was released in 1984.

The film presented a very believable context of life in Russia and the sacrifices made to pursue the ideal of freedom in America by defecting.

Not only is it a very poignant reflection of culture, life choices and what real happiness is…. the film is also really damned funny.

Frankly this is now among my favorite Robin films.   Here is the trailer for it below.
