It’s not the dates that count, but what you do with the DASH

Learning about Robin’s life, how he lived it and how he loved is a heart warming journey.  Choosing what to share is incredibly difficult, especially if this might be the last time I publish on this website.

For this post I have chosen to share how fully he loved the people in his life, that choices were sometimes hard… but he gave his all and to anyone graced with the presence of his tender soul knows how special that gift is.

Below is the 2005 ceremony for the Cecil B. DeMille Award.  He has received many awards over his lifetime and besides the one from Comedy Day, this is one of our favorites.

The following video is based on interviews recorded by Lawrence Grobel for Playboy in 1991 which reveals his sensitivity and concern for the world around him.

Robin talks about future predictions, the philosophy of comedy, then breaks down the comedy of sex and the universal faces people make during lovemaking.

FINALLY he turns to the joys of having children and looks inward at his own shortcomings and, of course, being hairy.

Thank you to his family and friends for sharing this beautiful soul with the world.  It must have been very difficult at times to find a balance between boundless dreams and enthusiasm and the finite time we all have on this earth.

In the end none of us have very long on this earth.  …but for some, our legacies will last for many generations to come.

Music heals the brain ~ Here is PROOF

This is a heart-warming story which is living proof that music really does have healing power.

20,000 people learned something wonderful that night about brain injury,  kindness and how important our words and ideas can be… even when you don’t see the affect it has on others.

11- year old Zumyah Thorpe lost her pregnant mother and two younger sisters in a car accident after they were hit by a drunk driver in 2013. Though she survived, she suffered severe physical injuries, including a traumatic brain injury.

Most patients in this same condition do not survive and those who do are often left without the ability to walk, talk or eat on their own. Doctors have credited Bruno Mars’ music with helping Zumyah do all of those things, after nurses played his songs to her at the hospital every night.

Zumyah’s grandmother Ronda said that not long after coming out of the coma she started singing Mars’ hit song (You’re Amazing) Just The Way You Are.

Doctors say this music therapy is what helped Zumyah recover quicker than most and Bruno’s music is credited with helping to save her life.

After Bruno learned of her amazing story they met privately and then she was invited to his concert in Cleveland, Ohio.  He  wanted to make sure Zumyah knew she is amazing just the way she is and gave her well-deserved serenade in front of 20,000 fans.

He jumped off the stage and into the crowd where he embraced Zumyah and sang her favorite song ‘Just The Way You Are.’

There were very few dry eyes in the arena after his special dedication to an amazing young lady who showed us that music truly does have healing power.

WORDS AND IDEAS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!

* Special note ~ The curator of this website also has traumatic brain injury (TBI).  The challenges of TBI manifest in many ways.  A consistent challenge faced by this population is the compromised ability to process and act on information.  I learned that I prefer calming acoustic music because it is a CONTINUOUS wave of energy… it helps with my clarity of thought and calms my mind and heart.

For those that do not have a brain injury, that should give you some idea of how beneficial such music can be for the general population, including you.

If you ever do know someone in a coma, PLEASE keep the chaotic sound to a minimum, keep fluorescent lights off, speak gently and keep physical contact.  All of this is registered by the brain and matters a lot in healing while in the coma and after awakening.  Routine and calm will become very important elements for the rest of their life to function at their highest potential.

The original interview about honoring a spiritual legacy

Helping others is sometimes easy to do with money, but being involved directly in a person’s life, as Robin often did, brings greater joy to ALL and healthier communities that connect and protect.

Mutual exchanges of kindness helps us all THRIVE and be stronger as a whole.  Helping others rise above their constraints builds confidence and self-esteem.  And it allows lonely people to be re-integrated into society and help them feel they belong.

I had a private conversation with one of Robin’s dearest friends of over 30 years.    They were social workers together in countless contexts.

Robin could have led a more private life, but he made a very deliberate choice to lead by example.

I’m very grateful for him sharing his insight with us, so we can further appreciate what Robin’s legacy really means to us.

“Don’t mourn Robin.  Don’t grieve Robin.”
“Be Robin for someone else.”

Please.

Please do NOT fundraise using Robin’s name.   Apparently, it MAY create problems for his estate with the IRS.  The goal is to watch people more, to help them do something they can’t do for themselves or to help them feel less lonely.  Direct involvement and being of service in another person’s life is what this is about!to live2c

Barry’s Verse for BeRobin4Someone

Barry Crimmins is a hero who has now established the legacy he hoped for and he sacrificed decades of his life to do it.

He raised awareness and fought one on of the darkest issues of our time.  Motivated by personal anger, he led a public discussion of the issue that has changed the way the world thinks about child molestation online and in the world around us.

This is the trailer for his documentary of Call Me Lucky

Here is were you can find out where the movie might be playing near you: http://www.callmeluckymovie.com

This is an article written by one of my favorite comedians: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/08/08/the-original-jon-stewart.html

Call Barry Lucky?  ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME??

To do what he did, he had to endure moments of enormous pain and decades of sacrifice and dark moments.

CALL US LUCKY!

Seize the Day!

This tribute is about Robin Williams’ most quoted words.  They are very sincerely spoken.  These words are very reflective of his heart, the way he lived, what he wished for and what we all wish for.

Melodysheep was nominated for a Webby award in 2015 for the creation of this unique video.   ~

O’Captain, My Captain!

If you want to learn more about this website WhatDreamsMayCome.org and an extra-ordinarily beautiful human being, click here

I directed people to this tribute from my other website that I have invested my life and heart into called TipsFromSurvivors.org.  You can visit that website to learn more.

I am doing both websites in RWs honor and these words resonate deeply with me during this journey.  It has been a very bumpy and difficult journey, but I live authentically and if I succeed in my dreams, then it will have been a life well-lived… Otherwise I feel this life and my belief in humanity to be kind was time wasted.

To do this means having a willingness to make mistakes, because the longer I wait to find my voice, the less likely I will ever begin at all.

Ananda’s Verse for BeRobin4Someone

~ THE MAGIC NEVER ENDS ~

Robin loved teamwork in EVERYTHING he did and Ananda Collins delightful tribute is a wonderful reflection of this.

Ananda joined our heartsong at WhatDreamsMayCome.org on Valentines Day by offering an amazing tribute for Robin.

Happy Valentine’s Day with HOOK.
Cockadoooooodle dooooooo!!!!!

Then spring arrived with all it’s colors and promise of possibilities.  One of Robin’s quotes was “Spring is Nature’s Way of Saying Let’s Party!”  And so we did.  Together with other fans we gathered his best quotes which were assembled into printable quotes that could be put in Easter Eggs.

We shared hundreds of Robin’s quotes in eggs with the world!button 15bThese quotes were formatted and freely shared with who ever asked for them.  This then planted the seeds for Ananda’s tribute in Spain for Robin’s birthday on 7/21.  Everything Ananda does is a “class act” and this tribute below was no exception to that.

CHRONICLE OF AN ECHO – CELEBRATING ROBIN’S BIRTHDAY
by Ananda Collins

Ananda wanted that vivid spark of full goose bozo magic to splash the hearts of her community and her neighborhood.  What better way to do it than then quotes.

Using 10 meters of customized ribbon, rainbow colors card-stock, gold pencil, glue and lots of paper and love she created and delivered 250 quotes and 110 flyers to some very lucky people.

She gave IMMENSE love and time to create these tokens of Robin’s spirit.  She didn’t want her quotes “gone with the wind”, therefore mailboxes were her primary target. Ananda talked about the project with a very wise person, aka mom, and she suggested delivering the quotes to public places as well. They decided they had to be public places that Robin was fond of.  Her city colleges and centers of study was the perfect choice. She printed 13 small posters for this purpose.

3

Delivering those was no easy task. There are two main campuses in her city but were very far away from each other. Also anyone who has visited Spain during this time of the year knows it can get really hot there. But hey, who doesn’t like sweat to be rolling down the crack of one’s ass like Niagara? So off she went.

Spreading seeds of love

Finally the day of Robin’s birthday arrived. She wanted people to wake up next morning with this token of Robin’s spirit, hence the delivery had to be done during the night.   The next day, the city woke up with a new happy thought on its mind: Robin Williams.

This is the city where she lives:

Reality What A Concept (Full Show)

This is Robin’s first HBO produced called “Off the Wall.”  It was  recorded at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood in 1978 and he followed that up with his first album “Reality…What a Concept” in 1979.

Some funny quotes from this stand-up performance:

  • I’d like to start the show by showing you something I’m very proud of. You’ll have to step back, though.
  • Oh, no, everyone I’ve ever known! There are people here I’ve slept with twice!
  • I wonder what chairs think about all day: “Oh, here comes another asshole.”
  • Mork? NOOOO! I do that 5 times a week. This is a special time.
  • You’re only given a little spark of madness. you mustn’t lose it.
  • People, they’re kinda like flowers and it’s been a privilege kinda pollinating here in your garden.

Robin’s former classmate shares his verse to BeRobin4Someone

I have been inspired by the great generosity, compassion and social activism of Robin Williams.  On September 12 I will embark on a project that is very close to my heart. I will be performing a program of solo flute music at a fundraiser for the Natasha House, an establishment providing aid to the homeless in Yorktown, VA.

This will be the first of many trips that I’ll be making to such facilities throughout the Tidewater area of Virginia, performing and teaching.

This is my “being Robin” in my own small way.

alans tribute2

There are many sites on Facebook that celebrate the life and work of Robin. However, “Tributes4RobinWilliams ~ Be Robin!” and WhatDreamsMayCome.org, both the creative work of Kimberly Carr, go further to inspire his fans to actively carry on his legacy of loving concern.  I am deeply indebted to Kimberly’s influence, which has helped steer me in this very fulfilling direction.

I attended the Juilliard School in New York, as did Robin. I was very lucky in that our years there overlapped. I can’t say that we were close friends, but I have very vivid and fond memories of him from that time. For one thing, we were in a drama class together.  Pity the poor teacher!

It would be an immense understatement to say that Robin’s ability to improvise in every style of the dramatic repertoire, including Shakespearian iambic pentameter, was absolutely side-splittingly hilarious. Needless to say, the teacher lost control of the class every meeting!

As Christopher Reeve, Robin’s roommate in those years, wrote – “I’d never seen so much energy contained in one person. He was like an untied balloon that had been inflated and immediately released. I watched in awe as he virtually bounced off the walls of the classrooms and hallways…There was never a moment when he wasn’t doing voices, imitating teachers, and making our faces ache from laughing at his antics.”

I hope you enjoy my rendering of the theme song of “Mork and Mindy.”

Love can be celebrated in ways you don’t expect.

Here’s a story of what it was like to live in a homeless shelter during NYE 2012 and how gestures of love can (_(_ECHO)_) in the most unusual of places.1I am telling you part of my story not because I want you to feel my pain of needing to live in a homeless shelter for medical reasons after I lost my home to a fire.   I’m telling you this story because we all can be Robin for someone ~ No matter what our life circumstance.

***************
NYE 2012
***************

Many of the residents of the shelter I stayed at have drinking problems or were vulnerable to drinking again with the emotional stress that comes with the holiday season and their life predicament.

As a consequence, it was a mandatory rule that all residents of the shelter had to stay in on NYE.  I was kind of mad and frustrated at first, because it was a drunk driver that change the course of my life.  Then I decided to turn a sad situation into a positive one for myself and all the residents.

I showed some wonderful short films that had spiritual significance and joy and then we played Pictionairy.

I’ll never forget the laughter and how residents engaged in the game.  There was a man in his 30s in a wheel chair who couldn’t talk, but his way of expressing joy was to throw party favors at us.

(DUCK!!!!… Cause they weren’t small party favors!)

At midnight I turned out the lights, lit one large candle and placed it in the middle of the room.  We all gathered in a circle around the candle for a ceremony that I’ve done a few times over the years…

Earlier in the day I went to a cemetery and grabbed a big branch from an oak tree to use for the midnight ceremony.  I explained that I chose a branch from this location because it represents that we are STILL alive and STILL have choices.

I asked them to consider what they would like to eliminate from their life, pick a leaf and toss it out of the circle, then pass it around.

When the branch came back around then share what they would like to bring into their life in the new year, pick a leaf and toss it into the circle.

It was really amazing some of the things that were shared in that ceremony.  Stories and life experiences were so touching.

What was even more magical was what happened AFTER that night.

In the days that followed in the cafeteria, people who usually sat alone out of pain or fear were sitting with other people and talking.  And I had people coming up to me and thanking me for hosting that event and telling me that it was the most joy and happiness they had felt in a long time.

In the days that followed I gave chalk to the residents to express themselves. —  Two of the residents had surprised me with chalk drawing around my rental car. 3

(My car was totaled TWICE after the DMV saw how handicapped I was and revoked my license.  I drove anyhow.   The DMV was right to take away my license, but WHO the hell else was gonna help me with housing and medical appointments?)

IMG00134-20130106-1112

So bottom line is even when circumstances are REALLY bad, we all have a choice….  No matter what our life circumstance, we ALL can be Robin for someone…. EVEN A HOMELESS PERSON CAN!!!

I have spent thousands of hours and over two years trying to take a horrific situation that almost cost me my life and have been trying to turn it into a positive situation to help thousands of people by PREVENTING HOMELESSNESS and to find my own healing in making this happen. ~  Because if I can’t find a world where people wouldn’t allow what happened to me to be ok, then I don’t want any of this world.
